The Brain that Changes Itself_
※ Preface
§ 譯文: p.17
Preface”
For four hundred years this venture would have been inconceivable because mainstream medicine and science believed that brain anatomy was fixed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
§ 譯文: p.17
Preface”
The common wisdom was that after that childhood the brain changed only when it began the long process of decline; that when brain cells failed to develop properly, or were injured, or died, they could not be replaced.
評析:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
§ 譯文: p.19
Preface”
…, and their peers belittled them for promoting a fanciful notion.
原文: p.11
… The stimulators functioned like pixels vibrating for the dark part of a scene and holding still for the brighter shades. This “tactile-vision device,” as it was called, enabled blind subjects to read, make out faces and shadows, and distinguish which objects were closer and which farther away. It allows them to discover perspective and observe how objects seem to change shape depending upon the angle from which they were viewed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
§ 譯文: p.33
原文: p.11
This being the 1960s, they even learned to recognize a picture of the anorexic supermodel Twiggy.
評析:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
§ 譯文: p.36
原文: p.13
As crude as it sounds, he wasn’t so far off. Scientists soon refined his primitive picture, arguing that not some fluid but an electric current moved through the nerves.
T: Descarte's primitive picture.

原文: p.14
He drives a rusty twelve-year-old car, his wife a new model Passat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
§ 譯文: p.38
... , and appears a lot younger than his sixty-nine years. He’s obviously cerebral but radiates a boyish warmth toward his wife, Esther, a Mexican of Mayan descent.
評析:

http://www.ling.fju.edu.tw/neurolng/chinese.htm
Actually, initial development of human anatomy in China was earlier than that in Europe.
See Introduction

I pushed against the turnstile, praying that this Monday would be the exception, that he’d let me pass without a performance. Negative.
“Yo, tell me what you want, what you really, really want,” he sang with his huge, toothy smile and Spanish accent. And all the pleasure of making the cabbie happy and finding out that I had arrived ahead of Miranda vanished. I was left, as I as every morning, wanting to reach across the security counter and tear the flesh from Eduardo’s face. But since I was such a good sport and he was one of my only friends in the place, I weakly acquiesced. “I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want, I wanna - I wanna - I wanna - I wanna- I really, really , really wanna zigga aiz aaaaaahhhh,” I sand meekly in a pitiful tribute to the Spice girls’ nineties hit. And once again, Eduardo grinned and buzzed me through.
“Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me, I think they’re okay-ay,” Eduardo, the round and slightly sweaty security guard, began singing in a high-pitched voice from behind the security desk. ……
The day before was “I’m Too Sexy.” As he sang, “I’m too sexy for Milan, too sexy for Milan, New York and Japan,” I had to walk down the lobby’s imaginary runway. ……
“If they don’t give me proper credit, I just walk away-ay,” I muttered, allowing the words to stretch and fade, just like Madonna.
He raised his eyebrows. “Where’s the enthusiasm, girlfriend?”
I thought I’d do something violent if I heard his voice again, so I dropped my bag of papers on the counter, threw both arms up in the air and thrust my hips to the left, while pursing my lips into a dramatic pout. “A material! A material! A material! A material… WORLD!” I all but screamed, and he cackled and clapped and whoosh! He buzzed me through.
Mental note: Discuss with Eduardo when and where it is appropriate to make a complete ass of me.

<英> P.146
I laughed. “Go on, say it. Do you think my friend is a whore? She’s just free-spirited, is all. And is she seeing someone? What kind of question is that? Someone named Pink-Shirt Boy stayed over there last night. I don’t think I know his real name.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
